World Skills UK Careers Event

Students were involved in a World Skills UK event that took place at Barking & Dagenham College which encouraged students’ ability to effectively enhance their Post-16 options and transferrable skills. The programme included ‘have a go’ taster sessions, and practical workshops, combined with the opportunity to talk directly to employers and industry experts.

All the students had a great time, here are some student responses;

“This was my first time going to a college, and it was amazing, I enjoyed experiencing the different job. I never knew there were so many different ways into getting into different careers”.

“I have never seen how to build an air conditioning unit, it was good to see how it is built and be able to ask questions about the industry”

“I created a battery from foil and copper coins and I was able to light up a light bulb. I learned about the different apprenticeships available through Barking & Dagenham College and I was excited to talk to Amazon, about which apprenticeships they had available”.

Students enjoyed their time at the college, looking at the different industries and experiencing work life and activities in the following work fields; Laboratory Technician, Electronic Security Systems, Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Automation, Mechatronics, Floristry, and Accountancy Technician.

In addition, students in Year 11, are getting ready for their Post- 16 options, so they were able to speak to college representatives about life at Barking & Dagenham College and the subjects available to them. Students are now able to make better informed choices in regards to their Post 16 pathway and what that might look like for individuals.
