We celebrated our newly decorated library at RAP, a dedicated space designed to support pupils in exploring and developing their interest in reading, across both fiction and non-fiction.
The development of this newly decorated, dedicated library space has been a much-needed step for the school, and pupil response has been overwhelmingly positive. Many pupils are actively engaging with the space and are increasingly confident in discussing the books they are reading, as well as suggesting titles they would like to explore in the future.
The introduction of the Accelerated Reader programme has had a particularly positive impact. Pupils’ eagerness to read has increased through structured support that helps them choose books of interest, track their progress, and reflect on their reading. Once pupils complete a book, they take part in a comprehension-based quiz, which further develops reading comprehension and, importantly, reading for meaning.
Pupils also have designated weekly sessions to explore a wide range of texts, from non-fiction to fiction. This structured approach has fostered a calm and purposeful reading environment. As one pupil commented; “This is a calm place to be in where I can focus and just read.”
The library will continue to develop over time and will include a wider range of high-interest, age-appropriate texts, additional non-fiction resources linked to the curriculum, quiet reading and reflection areas, and structured reading interventions to further support literacy development across the provision.
