Short Stay Provision (SSP)

The Short Stay Provision (SSP) at RAP is a short-term intervention designed to support students whose behaviour is impacting their ability to succeed in their mainstream school. The SSP provides an opportunity for students to step away from their usual setting, reflect on their behaviour, and develop the skills and strategies needed to make a successful return.

Referring schools may place a student in the SSP for up to 15 days per academic year as an external intervention. This placement is intended to support early intervention and prevent further escalation, with a strong focus on reintegration back into the referring school.

The SSP is a supportive and structured placement that prioritises reflection, learning and personal development. Placements are made in partnership with referring schools, parents and carers, and are built around a shared commitment to helping students re-engage positively with education.

While attending SSP, students follow a structured daily timetable in a calm and focused learning environment. Students are expected to complete work provided by their referring school or Redbridge Alternative Provision (RAP) and work independently, with staff available to offer guidance and support where required.

A key part of the SSP is mentoring and 1:1 support, where students are supported to reflect on the reasons behind their behaviour, understand the impact of their actions, and develop strategies to support positive change. The aim is to help students return to their mainstream school with improved confidence, clearer expectations, and practical tools to support their success.

 Reintegration

Reintegration planning begins from the start of a student’s placement in the SSP. Our focus is always on supporting a smooth, safe and successful return to the referring school.

Throughout the placement, the SSP lead works closely with the referring school, parents and carers to monitor progress and ensure consistency of expectations. Students receive regular mentoring and support to help them reflect on their behaviour, attitudes to learning and personal goals.

At the end of the placement, the referring school will receive a detailed end-of-placement report, which includes:

  • An overview of the student’s engagement and behaviour during their time in SSP
  • Details of mentoring and 1:1 interventions delivered
  • Factors observed that may be impacting behaviour and learning
  • Recommendations and strategies to support reintegration

Students attending SSP are supervised at all times. They remain within the SSP area during breaks and lunchtimes and do not mix with pupils from the main school. Lunch is provided on site, and students are not permitted to leave the school premises during the day. To support safeguarding and wellbeing, students are escorted off site at the end of the school day to ensure a calm and orderly departure.

The SSP aims to support students to return to their referring school feeling supported, prepared and ready to make a fresh start.

Targets and Support

Each student placed in the SSP will work towards a set of individual targets, agreed during the initial meeting. These targets are reviewed regularly and are designed to support positive behaviour, improved engagement and successful reintegration.

Targets may focus on:

  • Behaviour for learning
  • Emotional regulation and self-management
  • Engagement and motivation
  • Relationships with peers and adults

Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their progress and to understand how meeting their targets supports their return to mainstream education.
