A Poetry Masterclass

What a wonderful week we have had exploring poetry here at RAP!

During our form tutor time each morning, we have had fun with ‘Tongue Twister’ poetry games (how fast can you say ‘Betty bought a bit of butter’?); ‘Poetry Quest’ –  a treasure hunt to find various poetry forms such as Haiku, Sonnet, Limerick and Cinquain posted around the school and ‘Tutor’s Choice’, exploring poetry and music.

This was all to coincide with the launch of the Young Poet Laureate Programme and Competition that our Key Stage 3 pupils have been entered for.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to be mentored by the UK’s leading poets, travel the country to inspire young people to be creative writers, have their own work published and go to Buckingham Palace to meet the King!

On Tuesday 25th November, two of the UK’s leading poets, Karl Nova and Nikita Gill, gave an Online Zoom Masterclass to our students here at RAP. Students were engaged and wrote several poems which will be the base of their entries for the competition.

The opportunities we are providing for our young people here at RAP are planting seeds of pride and self-esteem which we can see grow before our very eyes; after seeing the quality of their poem, a student said with a huge smile on their face “I’m taking that home to show my dad.” Well done Key Stage 3!
