A visit to New Scientist Live

The New Scientist Live 2025 returned to the Excel Centre London and for the second year in succession Redbridge Alternative Provision were able to take Year 10 and Year 11 students to experience STEM and other areas of science that are developing in the world today. Students were able to access several exhibitors and engage in conversation about the work that is vitally important in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Our students were keen to talk about how Antibiotics work and why they are necessary in many cases to aid recovery from several illnesses. They were also spoken to by Leonardo who were at the forefront of thermal imaging and how it would detect areas of hot and cold. This included a demonstration with a flask and a bag of M&M’s followed by a group thermal image photo.

IN2SCIENCE, a company developing innovative ways to train doctors for brain surgery and other intrusive operations, by using VR as a teaching tool. One of our students soon got the hang of it and was able to follow the clear instructions and was praised for their competency whilst using the headset for the first time and manoeuvring the hand device in such a way as to complete their task.

Robotics and VR (virtual reality) were clearly popular with the students, but they also engaged with several other exhibitors including the Dog’s Trust, Keele and Middlesex Universities, the Medical Mavericks and the Royal Entomological Society. They sampled from the Mind and body Stage, discussing the positive need for Yakult and the benefits to your gut.

Walking around the exhibition gave our students an opportunity to look at different career pathways with a number of areas in Health, Nutrition, the RAF, and STEM Learning.

Areas designated for The Alzheimer’s Society and the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which are very current, had the students’ asking questions as there is a big drive on how people can donate to help improve many lives who deal with these medical issues on a daily basis.
