To celebrate everything that has been achieved at RAP this year, our students and staff packed their bags and headed to Thriftwood Scout Camp for two action-packed days and one unforgettable night away from school.
From the moment they arrived, there was a genuine sense of excitement. Surrounded by woodland and open space, the noise and routine of school life quickly felt far away. Cabins were explored, sleeping arrangements were negotiated and bags were unpacked before everyone prepared for the adventures ahead. Spending time outdoors gave students the opportunity to disconnect from their usual surroundings, embrace nature and enjoy learning in a completely different environment. 
Across the two days, students were challenged through archery, climbing, rifle shooting, the Cresta Run and kayaking. Each activity was designed to develop resilience, confidence, teamwork and friendship, but it was the students themselves who brought those qualities to life.
It was wonderful to see students encourage one another when challenges felt difficult, celebrate each other’s successes and find the courage to try something new. Some discovered skills they did not know they had, while others overcame nerves and pushed themselves beyond their own expectations. With every challenge completed, confidence grew and relationships between students and staff became noticeably stronger.
As evening approached, the smell of burgers and hot dogs cooking filled the air. Students and staff ate together, sharing stories from the day and reflecting on their favourite moments. Throughout the meal, our students were kind, helpful and respectful, making sure everyone was included.
After dinner, students could choose between watching the World Cup football or taking on the Cresta Run. Most chose the excitement of the Cresta Run. The sound of wheels racing along the run was quickly followed by laughter, cheers and excited calls for another turn. There was plenty of friendly competition as everyone tried to travel faster and further than before.
Later that evening, everyone gathered around the campfire, which proved to be one of the highlights of the residential. The warmth of the fire, the smell of woodsmoke and the sound of music created a wonderful atmosphere beneath the night sky. There was singing, dancing, laughter and conversation as students and staff relaxed together after a busy day of activities.
For many students, it was a special opportunity to spend time outdoors, away from screens and the usual routines of everyday life, simply enjoying each other’s company. One student summed up the experience perfectly, saying, “The campfire was my favourite part of the trip.” Eventually, most settled down to sleep, although a few were far too excited by the day’s adventures and continued talking long after the lights had gone out.
The following morning brought a final adventure: kayaking. There was excitement and perhaps a little nervousness as students put on their buoyancy aids, picked up their paddles and took to the water. Before long, the sound of splashing and laughter travelled across the lake as everyone learned how to steer, balance and paddle with increasing confidence. Some glided smoothly across the water, while others discovered that staying dry was not necessarily part of the experience!
Kayaking was the perfect way to end the residential. By the time the group left Thriftwood, students were tired but proud, carrying muddy clothes, new skills and wonderful memories home with them.
The residential was about far more than the activities. It was about students supporting one another, overcoming challenges, building confidence and experiencing success outside the classroom. Spending time together in the outdoors helped strengthen friendships, deepen relationships between students and staff, and create memories that will last a lifetime. 
Students returned to RAP as a stronger and closer community, extremely proud of everything they had achieved. Thriftwood gave them adventure, laughter and memories that will remain with them for a very long time.
