Year 10

English

The Key Stage 4 English Language and Literature curriculum is designed to introduce students to a rich and diverse range of texts that challenge, inspire, and cultivate lifelong readers. Our skills-based approach equips students with the tools and knowledge needed to confidently articulate and express their thoughts, ideas, and emotions on a variety of topics, both verbally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences.

Students are encouraged to engage with thought-provoking questions and develop the ability to shape these ideas into meaningful, well-structured, and analytical pieces of writing. Through the exploration of varied themes and perspectives, the curriculum broadens students’ understanding of the world around them and deepens their critical thinking skills.

Alongside preparation for GCSE English Language and English Literature, students can gain Entry Level and equivalent qualifications (Functional Skills) where appropriate, ensuring that all learners are supported and able to achieve success. By fostering a shared passion for English, we aim to ignite a love of reading and writing that extends beyond the classroom and into everyday life.

Mathematics

The Key Stage 4 maths curriculum is designed to ensure that all students develop fluency in mathematical reasoning and problem solving, preparing them for everyday life and future employment. We aim to equip students with the mathematical and numerical skills they need to thrive academically and function confidently and successfully in society.

Through a structured and supportive approach, students build fluency, enabling them to select appropriate strategies, reason mathematically, and apply their knowledge to solve a range of problems. The curriculum is tailored to meet individual needs, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills required for their chosen personal pathways.

Alongside preparation for GCSE Mathematics, pupils can achieve equivalent qualifications, including Functional Skills. This ensures that learners of all abilities are supported to make excellent progress, achieve recognised qualifications, and fulfil their potential.

Science

The Key Stage 4 science curriculum aims to ignite curiosity and develop an inquisitive understanding of the world around us. Through engaging and structured lessons, students build essential scientific enquiry skills, including classifying, comparing, predicting, modelling, gathering and analysing data, measuring accurately, and making informed observations.

The curriculum is designed to consolidate and deepen knowledge introduced at earlier Key Stages, strengthening students’ understanding of key scientific ideas and concepts. Science is delivered across the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, enabling students to explore different areas of the subject and develop their individual interests and strengths.

Alongside preparation for GCSE Science, pupils can achieve equivalent qualifications where appropriate. Studying Science at Key Stage 4 provides students with a strong foundation for further education, training, and a wide range of future career pathways.

Art

The Key Stage 4 art curriculum is designed to develop students’ resilience, confidence, and creativity through sustained independent exploration of materials, techniques, processes, and personal ideas. Students are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks, and express themselves imaginatively and inventively within a supportive environment.

Throughout the course, students refine their practical skills while learning to contextualise and critically analyse both historical and contemporary art. This ensures their work is informed, purposeful, and reflective, leading to a meaningful and enriching artistic experience.

Students will sit GCSE Art, building a strong portfolio that demonstrates their technical ability, creativity, and critical understanding. The curriculum also supports students in recognising the wide range of progression pathways available within the arts, while gaining insight into the significant role art plays in shaping culture and society today

Food Technology

The Key Stage 4 food technology curriculum is designed to enable students to explore the art of cooking and food innovation in a practical and engaging way. With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, students develop essential skills in food preparation, cooking techniques, and an understanding of the nutritional value of ingredients.

The curriculum combines practical experiences with underpinning theoretical knowledge, allowing students to understand where food comes from, how it contributes to a healthy lifestyle, and how to plan and produce a range of dishes safely and effectively.

Through this balanced approach, students gain the skills and knowledge required to access an appropriate qualification pathway, whether that be a BTEC Level 2 or a GCSE qualification, supporting their individual strengths and future aspirations.

History

The Key Stage 4 history curriculum intends to refine students’ historical understanding, critical analysis and independent research skills.  Students are encouraged to explore connections, causation and differing perspectives. Through engaging with primary and secondary sources, the curriculum intends to cultivate a nuanced appreciation for historical contexts. Additionally, the curriculum aims to prepare students for further academic pursuits and instil a sense of historical curiosity.  This will empower students to navigate the complexities of the modern world with a well-informed historical perspective, allowing them to achieve a recognised qualification.

Music

The Key Stage 4 music curriculum intends to not only focus on helping pupils to express themselves creatively through performance and composition but also includes preparing pupils for music industry careers. This comprehensive program ensures pupils not only cultivate a thorough understanding of music but also acquire practical skills, providing them with the essential knowledge for successful endeavours in the dynamic music industry. The curriculum aims to empower pupils with a well-rounded musical education that prepares them for a variety of opportunities and challenges; all whilst gaining a BTEC qualification.

PE

The Key Stage 4 PE curriculum is underpinned by the philosophy of ‘Sport for All’. We are committed to delivering an engaging and enjoyable experience for every student, enabling them to acquire the skills and knowledge in line with the National Curriculum.

Through a carefully structured programme, students develop their physical, social, and mental skills, allowing them to participate confidently in a variety of roles within Physical Education. The curriculum promotes teamwork, resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship, while building confidence in applying skills effectively within competitive situations.

Alongside their practical development, pupils have the opportunity to gain a GCSE equivalent qualification, ensuring they achieve recognised accreditation while fostering a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and healthy living.

PSHE/RSE

The Key Stage 4 PSHE/RSE curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge, skills, and personal attributes to support a healthy, safe, and successful transition into adulthood. Pupils explore their own attitudes, values, and beliefs while developing an understanding of other people’s perspectives. The curriculum incorporates both distanced and experiential learning opportunities, allowing pupils to practice managing influence and risk and to make informed decisions about health, relationships, financial capability, future learning, and employability.

RSE is included within the PSHE program to encourage respect and understanding of different faiths and the diversity within the community. By engaging with a range of beliefs and perspectives, pupils develop empathy and the skills needed to navigate complex social environments.

The curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for life in the modern world, equipping them to live as happy, healthy, and fulfilled adults who can successfully navigate diverse and ever-changing communities and workplaces. Parents have the statutory right to withdraw their child from the sex education element of the RSE curriculum.
